Generally, a well-maintained piston engine can run 100,000 to 300,000 miles or more before it needs a major overhaul or replacement. With proper care and maintenance, some high-performance piston engines have been known to last 500,000 miles or more.

The piston is located in the engine cylinder. Most cars have four, six or eight of these devices. Each cylinder has a piston inside, which mainly moves up and down. In the process of sliding, the piston drives the crankshaft connected to the gearbox to turn, thus providing power to the car's wheels.

In general, the cost of repairing a damaged piston can range from $500 to $4,000 or more, depending on the severity of the damage, the make and model of the car, and the location of the repair shop.

Whether to replace one piston or all pistons depends on the situation. In some cases, a single piston may fail due to a manufacturing defect or damage from a foreign object entering the engine, in which case only one can be replaced. However, if one piston fails due to a larger problem with the engine, such as poor lubrication or overheating, multiple pistons may need to be replaced to ensure proper engine operation.
